Savor the Fall Colors from Your Private Balconies

Upstairs in the loft you will find two private balconies with Adirondack chairs, blankets, and mugs so you can sip coffee or apple cider as you watch the fall colors change across the Mission Valley.

Sip your morning coffee or enjoy a hot apple cider in the afternoon while you take in the sweeping views of fall colors changing across the Mission valley.

Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch

Delight in a classic fall experience by visiting a local pumpkin patch. Pick out a festive gourd, a plump pie pumpkin, or a giant jack-o-lantern while you’re in town.

During your fall visit to Rugged Horizon, stop by a local pumpkin patch. We can help direct you to some nearby ones. If you are lucky, you might also spot some of our own pumpkins growing around the venue.

Take a Scenic Drive Through the Golden Larches

The Mission Mountains light up with patches of gold as the larch trees turn color in mid- to late october.

In mid- to late October, the larch trees light up the mountainsides in a glowing, vibrant yellow. Larches are deciduous conifers and they lose their needles every fall. They begin as a vivid lime green, then transition to breathtaking gold, before finally falling off and blanketing the forest floor as the winter snows return. To view this spectacular show, take a scenic drive from Rugged Horizon through the Jocko Valley. We provide a map of the Mission Mountains in the loft so that you don’t get lost, and we are happy to help you find your way to these and other attractions in the area.

Curl Up and Read a Good Book

Bring your favorite mystery novel and curl up on the couch, or select a title from our little library of Montana books. You might enjoy paging through photos of other Montana barns, learn some local history, or plan your next adventure with one of our travel guides.

Create Your Own Writer’s Retreat (or Artist’s Retreat)

Did you know the loft also makes a wonderful writer’s retreat? If you’ve been planning to finish your novel during NaNoWriMo, or if you just want some time to write in your journal or send some “happy mail” to a friend or family member, the loft is the place to do it. We stock our shelves with postcards, paper, and pens, and we invite you to indulge in your creativity and passion.

Perhaps you are an artist? Bring your canvas and your art supplies and let the natural light streaming through the windows inspire you.

Stay In and Do Nothing

As the temperatures dip and the snow returns to the valley, you will find your excuse to stay inside and enjoy some “me” time. You don’t have to do anything while you stay in the loft. You can run yourself a lavender-infused bath in the clawfoot tub, snuggle up in a fluffy robe, or sip hot tea. The silence is golden here; please soak in it.
